Not all dental cleanings are created equal. While the aim of regular dental cleanings is to remove plaque and tartar and maintain oral health, periodontal maintenance is a little more complex.

Regular dental cleanings, or prophylaxis, focus on the visible surface of the teeth, which is referred to as the crown. Whereas, periodontal maintenance targets the areas which are affected directly by your periodontal disease. A thorough cleaning is performed on not only the teeth, but the other problem areas including the gums, roots, and bone.

The aim of periodontal maintenance is to prevent the progression of the disease any further, while removing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and helping avoid infection. The Periodontists in our office will also conduct routine exams in order to access your periodontal disease status and evaluate gum health including status of any recession if present. Our office will work with you to insure the best form of maintenance for your stage of the disease. Frequency of appointments and forms of treatment will vary from patient to patient.
